It’s time to visit the town in a unique way by shift. Little island of 300 meters diameter shaped with the Dronne, Brantome received the name of “Venice of Perigord”. To end on a high note, don’t hesitate to visit the abbey church tower, certainly the oldest bell tower of France, that has the particularity having been built not on the church but on the rocky piton of 12 meters height. On the path, you will admire the Last Judgment cave, witness of the spirituality that filled with life the community during more than thousand years. You will notice the presence of ten caves converted in the cliff, where monks had arranged their crammer, washing place, mill and dovecote. Brantôme is often referred to as the Venice of Périgord as the centre of the town is surrounded by the river (which makes it an island) and has pretty stone houses on the water’s edge. You will visit it in an independent way thanks to plan and numerous commentated signs, very instructive. Built by Benedictine monks during the 7th and 8th centuries, this edifice has a section constructed in the cliff. In Green Perigord, Brantome captivates us when we arrive, with its abbey beauty and power.
